With the start of a new year now well underway, we are encouraging readers to dig deep and help us achieve our £3m target for the YEP’s Half and Half Appeal.

Last April we gave the appeal a kick start by launching Project £3m - our bid to top the impressive target and raise more vital cash for St Gemma’s and Sue Ryder Wheatfields.

Since then, you have raised over £25,000 - bringing 2014’s total to £30,000, which has now been shared equally between the two causes.

The appeal was also given a major boost by our Hospice Half Hour campaign in October, when people across the city gave up 30 minutes of their time during National Hospice Care Week.

One of those fundraisers was supermarket giant Morrisons who signed up to hold a 30-minute collection in 13 stores across Leeds for the appeal, as part of their partnership with Sue Ryder

Bosses at the chain have now counted up their cash from the collection and have sent a cheque to our office this week for a fantastic £500.

Martyn Jones, Morrisons’ group corporate services director, said: “Our colleagues and customers have raised over £2m towards our partnership with Sue Ryder in just 12 months, which is a fantastic achievement.

“The money raised is helping Sue Ryder to provide more incredible hospice care, so it seemed fitting to support the YEP’s Hospice Half Hour appeal and raise funds for two hospices which are close to our hearts.

“We’re delighted to have raised £500 towards the work of Wheatfields Hospice and St Gemma’s Hospice and I’d like to thank all our customers and colleagues for their support.”

Our total raised since the Half and Half Appeal launched back in 1982 has now reached £2,899,233 - with just £100,000 to go to reach our Project £3m target!
