A POPULAR north Leeds venue that closed its doors last year has been given a new lease of life.

The former Hummingbird site on Stainbeck Lane in Chapel Allerton, which closed in September 2013, has been transformed into a new bar, restaurant and cinema.

The new venue – called The Woods – officially opens its doors to the public tonight (July 11).

Owner Tom Edge, 45, from Adel, said: “We wanted to create a unique venue that’s family-friendly through the day and offers something a bit different in the evening.

“The Woods isn’t just a standard bar or restaurant, it’s a space that can be enjoyed by everyone.”

The Woods has a bar and ‘den’ area on the ground floor, which will host story telling sessions for children and parents during the day.

The restaurant is on the second floor and the third floor ‘canopy’ has another bar, a stage for live music, a cinema screen and an outdoor terrace.

Father-of-two Tom worked in fashion retail for 20 years before taking on The Woods.

He added: “I decided that I fancied a change. I was dropping the kids at school and saw the ‘To Let’ sign. The rest is history!

“It’s been great, and an exciting project for me.”

The Woods has created around 40 jobs.

The restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with real wood-fired pizzas and a menu by head chef Juan Carlos Mendes.

The venue has been given a makeover by designers Logan and Golden – the creative team behind the Stew and Oyster bar and The Wardrobe – and will have a Scandinavian feel.

Free events will be held throughout the week, including cinema evenings and live music performances.

Yoga and pilates classes will also be held.
