Newly-trained lifesavers, equipped with the skills to give vital first aid, are urging more YEP readers to take emergency training.

The plea comes after we teamed up with St John Ambulance in a bid to teach basic first aid skills to 500 people in Leeds.

A new series of three-hour courses for readers has been set up to help them get a lesson in lifesaving skills.

Graham Richardson, from Burley, undertook the training at Leeds Church Institute, in New Market Street, in the hope he could better deal with first aid emergencies in the workplace having seen everything from cuts to people getting fingers trapped in machines during his career in print finishing.

The 58-year-old, who is currently unemployed, said: “It’s a bit daunting but we have had a go on the dummies and now I feel I would be more confident in an emergency. More people need to take up training as injuries can happen to anyone – it could happen to your family.”

York resident Hazel Anderson, 21, also took part in Monday’s training. She said: “It’s about the peace of mind of knowing you’re kind of equipped with the skills you need.”

Our First Aid for All campaign comes after we revealed that more than half of parents in Leeds lack the first aid skills that could save their child’s life.
