A superstar dentist was honoured in last year’s Yorkshire Evening Post Best of Health Awards – and now we’re looking for someone just as deserving.

Entries are coming in for this year’s dentist of the year category, but we still want to hear about more of your top teeth experts.

Last year’s winner was Dr Claire Hawker, from the special care dentistry service run by Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Hawker looks after patients with extra needs such as mental health issues, learning disabilities or patients with severe phobias. She was named winner after the judges were moved by the description of the dedication to her job, which included squeezing patients’ hands when they were scared or talking to them throughout.

One commented that “I will never be able to praise her enough”.

This year’s Best of Health Awards, sponsored by Sovereign Health Care, are now looking for dentists just as thoughtful and committed to their patients.

There’s also still time to nominate in the other categories, for doctor, nurse, pharmacist, team, unsung hero, midwife, carer, mental health worker and emergency response worker.

Visit to fill in an online form or send your nominations to Kayla Lindsay, Yorkshire Post Newspapers, No 1 Leeds, 26 Whitehall Road, Leeds, LS12 1BE. Please mark your entry with the category and provide your nominee’s full name, job title, work address and telephone number and if possible an email address. Also include your own name, address, phone number and email address, as well as 200 words explaining why you have made the nomination.

The closing date is October 19. Winners will be picked by a panel of judges and revealed at an awards lunch on December 8.
