A BAKING-mad mum from north Leeds has stepped out of the kitchen to set up her very own cake shop.

Kary Goodwin, 50, has opened Just Heaven on Harrogate Road in Moortown.

The mum-of-three from Alwoodley started selling cake pops – miniature cakes on lollipop sticks – at local fairs, cafes and shops.

The business took off when she branched out to online sales with her Cake Pop Heaven company.

Orders were flocking in from across the globe – from Peru and Iceland to Patagonia and Macedonia – and soon afterwards, Kary set up the shop.

The former sales rep said: “I went to the USA for a holiday and saw the cake pops there. I thought it was great and wanted to start it up over here. They are just so cute.

“It was amazing – it went from being in the kitchen and doing home baking to having my own shop in just 18 months.

“I just love it. You have got to stay on the ball and keep thinking of new things every day.

“Every day is a new adventure as you try and keep ahead of everyone else. It’s exciting.”

As well as cake pops, the shop sells chocolate brownies, bakeware and kitchen products.

Kary also takes orders for weddings and has worked on events for Oreo, Audi, London Fashion Week.

Kary works at the Leeds store with apprentice Kirsty Gough and business manager Charlotte Bennington.

Charlotte said: “Cake pops are a really lovely, quirky product.

“Cake pops started in America but Kary was one of the first to do them over here, and now they are just starting to take off in Europe.

“I think we are the only actual shop in Leeds that you can go into and buy a cake pop.”

Kary plans to extend the business by adding milkshakes and giant cookies to the menu.
