The Save Parlington group is opposing Leeds City Council’s revised site allocations plan, which identifies the estate as a potential site in the longer term for up to 5,000 new homes.

Council chiefs say up to 1.850 new homes could be created at the site as part of the local authority’s bid to build 66,000 new homes across the city by 2028.

A public consultation on the proposals ends on November 7.

Around 80 people attended a public meeting organised by the Save Parlington group at Aberford Village Hall on Friday.

Group member Sally Elsworth, 27, said the Parlington Estate consists of farmland and woodland with trees dating back to the 13th century.

She said: “It is a greenbelt site. We are more upset because there are brownfield sites that are not being used before greenfield sites.”

The group has collected more than 500 signatures on a petition set to be handed in to Leeds City Council.

A Leeds City Council spokesman said: “The site at Parlington Estate is subject to public consultation and that process will continue before the plans are presented to the government for inspection.

“While taking into account local concerns, we also need to balance that with the needs of the city as a whole and the importance of having a framework in place to guide all development in Leeds up to 2028.

“Only 2.3 per cent of green belt land is allocated for development and the majority of these green belt sites are phased for later delivery in the plan period.

“The core strategy has earmarked over 52 per cent of housing allocations on previously developed land.”
