A FORMER Wetherby policeman has been honoured after having a bench named after him in the town.

John Tatterton, who spent three decades on the beat in the town and another 15 as the local handyman, was presented with the bench as a thank you for his services to the community.

Mayor of Wetherby Harry Chapman said: “He’s been very much part of Wetherby for around 50 years.”

John’s bench has been placed outside Wetherby Library. He said: “I was quite surprised and felt privileged.

“I didn’t do the work for the kudos, it was only because I wanted to not because I had to.

“I was born and bred in Wetherby.”
