New toys for outdoor-loving tots

One of the oldest nurseries in the city will see its playground get a much-needed upgrade - thanks to parent power.

Middleton St Mary’s was set up in 1971 and will receive new play equipment as part of a Sudocrem competition to get more kids playing outside.

The pre-school, which is attached to Middleton St Mary’s C of E Primary School, was one of 10 in the country chosen for the makeover after over 1,000 deserving nurseries were nominated by parents.

St Mary’s, which has 50 pupils aged three and four, will now be able to use the cash grant to add a new toy shed to its outdoor area.

Nursery manager Jenny Etherington said:

“We are very much looking forward to the toy shed being installed in our outdoor area to help enhance the children’s experiences and learning. We want our children to learn to love the outdoors and we use our lovely environment to teach them, amongst other things, about keeping fit and healthy and taking care of our world.”

The pharmacy brand’s Play More campaign was launched after research found 63 per cent of Yorkshire parents admitted to being protective and cautious of their children playing outside, and that many youngsters spent less than five hours a week outdoors.

Consumer healthcare director Ryan Ruscoe said:

“We’re proud to have promoted the spirit of adventure with Play More. The staff at Middleton St Mary’s show such enthusiasm for getting the children outdoors and learning about the world around them. Children love outdoor play and there are so many benefits for them - building friendships and helping them gain physical confidence are just two of the many.”
