PLANS for a new 18-storey residential scheme are in the pipeline for the former Yorkshire Evening Post site.
The first phase of the plans for the Wellington Street site, which are in the early stages, will see half of the land turned into 237 properties – with 121 two-bedroom and 116 one-bedroom apartments.
It will be built for the private rented sector and aimed at young professionals.
It will also include a bronze-clad, rooftop residents lounge over-looking the river, with space for a restaurant and bar.
The building will be 18 storeys tall, falling to 11 storeys closer the River Aire. Its basement car park will have 72 spaces and 140 bicycle spaces.
Demolitions crews cleared the 4.6 acre site in 2014 and only the landmark clock tower remains of the old newspaper office building, which was home to both the YEP and The Yorkshire Post for over 40 years.
In February 2015, outline planning permission was granted for a mixed used scheme, with three office buildings and a residential or hotel building. The new plans will be discussed by Leeds City Council’s city plans panel on June 9.
It comes as plans are also under way for an 11-storey residential scheme nearby. Hallborough Properties plans to transform the Grade II-listed 17 Wellington Street building into 35 apartments, with a glazed bridge to link it with a new contemporary 11-storey block at 49 Aire Street – a former warehouse and office building.
The plans also include space for a new restaurant and gym.
