New homes in east Leeds hailed as good foundation for community

A sod-cutting ceremony has been held to mark the start of one of the schemes, which will see 45 homes being built at Cartmell Drive in Halton Moor.

The development forms part of a wider regeneration programme being carried out in east Leeds by Keepmoat Homes and Strata Homes that will deliver 1,700 new homes over a 10-year period.

Homes are also already being built at Brooklands Avenue, York Road and Kentmere Approach in Seacroft thanks to the programme, a link-up between Keepmoat, Strata and Leeds City Council.

Temple Newsam ward councillors Helen Hayden, Michael Lyons and Debra Coupar were among the guests at the Cartmell Drive ceremony.

Coun Hayden said: “It is a really exciting moment when we kick off a house building programme.

“It is really pleasing that much needed affordable housing is being provided in east Leeds.

“Myself and my ward colleagues, Debra Coupar and Michael Lyons, look forward to seeing these homes being completed.”

A separate development in Gipton will comprise 27 council homes on Beech Walk and Beech Mount once it is finished in early 2020.

Two of the properties have been designed specifically for residents with accessibility needs.

Coun Arif Hussain, ward member for Gipton and Harehills, said: “I’m so pleased that the hard work that myself and my ward colleagues, Salma Arif and Kamila Maqsood, have put in has reached this outcome – brand new council homes in Gipton, catering for a wide variety of local residents.

“It is really important that we have this type of accommodation in Gipton and Harehills which is suitable for older people.”
