Leeds City Council’s £13m refurbishment of the market, due to be completed in the spring, will see meat, fish, game and other fresh food produce brought together in one area for the first time.

Named Britain’s favourite market last week, Leeds Kirkgate will welcome interesting and different food and drink stalls to complement the much-loved fishmongers, butchers, seafood stalls and greengrocers already there.

Councillor Gerry Harper, deputy executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: “Home to some amazing characters, bursting with history and offering amazing value, we already know that Kirkgate Market has so much to offer traders, shoppers and visitors alike.

“We are very proud of what Kirkgate already has to offer and there will always be a place for the traditional produce and traders which our customers already know and love.

“This is a great opportunity to be part of one of the most exciting developments in Leeds today.”

Founded in 1857, Leeds Kirkgate is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, home to more than 200 permanent businesses and up to 75 temporary stalls for speciality markets.

Examples of the stalls the market is keen to introduce include local or farm produce, niche food, organic produce, an ice cream parlour, handmade chocolates and a delicatessen.

Leeds City Council will hold two free events at the market to introduce potential stall holders to what the market has to offer. The first is on February 15 from 5.15pm-6.30pm and the second is on February 17, from 7.15am-9am.
