New Elland Road park and ride waiting area is '˜an early Chrismas present' for Leeds shoppers on the go

A plush new waiting area at Leeds's Elland Road park and ride will help boost the number of commuters and shopper bussing in the city centre, transport bosses hope.

The new facility opens on Monday, well in time for the festive retail rush, and includes toilets, baby-changing facilities, ticket machines and real-time information.

Transport bosses said today it was a “nice early Christmas present” for shoppers and commuters.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s transport chair Keith Wakefield said: “The opening of this new passenger facility, ahead of schedule, is just the latest benefit for people using the Elland Road Park and Ride to save themselves the cost and hassle of parking in Leeds city centre.

“Feedback tells us it is used from people travelling to Leeds from along the M62 corridor, from Huddersfield and Halifax with some from as far afield as Manchester.

“Only in October we opened an extension to the parking area, meaning there are now 800 spaces.

“The new modular passenger facility is an impressive and smart building and manufacturing off-site has resulted in a range of benefits including quicker production times.”

He added: “The opening of the new building on Monday will be a nice early Christmas present for Elland Road passengers.”

The opening of the new facility comes a week after the announcement of a major new £270m road and rail investment plan for Leeds.

It’s also the culmination of a busy 12-month period which included the opening of new stations at Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall Forge, as well as the new Leeds Station Southern Entrance.

Will Pearson, business manager at First Leeds, said: “It’s fantastic to see further investment being added to the thriving Elland Road Park and Ride site. Customers and staff will now benefit from a smart and modern Park and Ride environment, which will subsequently be used as a best practice site for future schemes in the region.”

Elland Road Park and Ride is open Monday to Saturday (except on Saturday Home Match Days) from 7am to 9.15pm with buses running every 10 minutes until 7pm.

It will also be open between 10.30am and 5.30pm this Sunday.

Tickets for the 10-minute journey to and from the city centre cost £2.70 per day.
