Executive director Mr Edwards retires after 18 years at the theatre in January. His replacement will be Katie Town, who is currently general manager of the learning department at The National Theatre on London’s South Bank. Ms Town, who is originally from Northallerton, has also worked at the Royal Opera House.

She said: “It is a very exciting time to be joining Theatre Royal Wakefield. The theatre is in a very strong position, achieved by the commitment of the dedicated team of staff and an active group of volunteers. Having celebrated the theatre’s 120th anniversary it is now time to build on this position and take the theatre into its next 120 years.”
