Nathan is in the running to thank cancer doctors in Leeds

A new job in Leeds proved a potential life-saver for Nathan McGregor when an alert GP spotted a sign of cancer that had gone undiagnosed for nearly a year.

Nathan, 23, of Morley, developed a lump on his neck while at university in Northampton but it was not investigated despite him seeing doctors over a period of nine months.

Then, after moving to Leeds to begin work as a draughtsman, Nathan registered with a new GP who instantly realised the lump could be an indication of a serious problem.

He was diagnosed with stage three Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and within two weeks was having chemotherapy at St James’s Hospital.

Now in remission, Nathan is preparing to run the Leeds Half Marathon in May to raise funds for the medics who treated him at Jimmy’s following his diagnosis in 2015.

He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Thank goodness the new GP realised what it might have been as by the time I was seen, the cancer was at stage three.

“It was a really stressful time, moving to a new city, starting a new job and then being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 22 – it all happened really quickly, but the team in Leeds were great.”
