A police officer kicked down the door of the smoke-logged terraced property on Acre Crescent, Middleton, and got the pair – who had been asleep – safely outside.

Fire crews arrived shortly afterwards and treated the woman and the child, who is understood to be aged under 10, for the effects of smoke inhalation.

They were then taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance.

Emergency services were called to the scene by concerned neighbours shortly after 8.30pm yesterday.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the incident was a “pan fire”.

Smoke damage was confined to the ground floor of the house.
