The M1 in South Yorkshire is closed in both directions over concerns for a man on a bridge.

Highways England said traffic was stopped on the north and southbound carriageways near junction 37 at Dodworth, Barnsley, earlier this morning, but now the motorway has been closed in both directions between 36 and 37.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police are currently responding to concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge over the M1 motorway at junction 37, following numerous calls from members of the public.

"Officers are working alongside Highways England and Yorkshire Ambulance Service to minimise the risk to the individual and to minimise disruption to road users.

"The road is closed in both directions and drivers are advised that there is currently significant congestion in the area, so are advised to plan alternative routes at this time."

A Highways England spokesman said: "Traffic is being diverted via local routes."
