MOBO awards return to Leeds with spectacular ceremony

The First Direct Arena was once again chosen to host the prestigious MOBO awards – which celebrate music of black origin – following a storming debut in 2015.

Actor and DJ Idris Elba was honoured with a Paving The Way gong for his “achievements in the arts and contribution to British culture”.

A paving stone will be embedded at a location in London, where the Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom star grew up.

Mr Elba said: “As someone who once faced homelessness, I know how important it is to have access to something better, to feel inspired and reach for your dreams. I’m blessed to have this chance to lay a paving stone in the place that I hold so dear and leave a legacy for future generations.

“I feel incredibly humbled to receive this honour. I have always felt a need to shine a light and pay a lasting tribute to the place that helped shape me in Hackney.”

The runaway winner of the evening was grime sensation Stormzy, who scooped two gongs when the ceremony last came to town.

At last night’s bash he was once again named Best Male and Best Grime Act, as well claiming the Best Album award for his debut full-length record Gang Signs & Prayer.

Stefflon Don took Best Female Act, the Best Song award went to Did You See by J Hus, Best Video was Hot Property by Mist, and Dave was named Best Newcomer.

Giggs was named Best Hip-Hop Act, Craig David was named Best RnB/Soul Act, Wizkid awarded Best International Act, and Davido was named Best African Act.

Damian Marley, youngest son of Bob, was named Best Reggae Act, Moses Boyd was named Best Jazz Act, and the Best Gospel Act award was claimed by Volney Morgan & New-Ye.

DJ and former JLS singer Marvin Humes hosted the evening alongside TV host and radio DJ Maya Jama.
