Mobile app designed by Leeds school students being launched on market

AN AWARD-winning mobile phone and tablet app designed by three pupils from a Leeds school was set to be launched on to the market tonight.

The trio, from Cockburn School in Beeston, came up with the idea for the Story Wall app – designed to bring mobile technology to creative writing and get more youngsters penning stories.

The app, which will be available to download from Apple’s app store, helps budding writers by encouraging other users to vote on or suggest what happens next in a story plot.

It won the Connected Communities category of Apps for Good’s 2013 awards programme, which was judged by a panel of experienced industry judges.

Apps for Good is a technology education movement which has teamed up with 210 schools to deliver their app development course to young people.

Since winning the award last June, the team has worked with development agency Quickblox to have their app prototype built professionally.

The app designing students Teigan Hainsworth, 13, Emma Sutton, 13, and Joe Myers, 14, were due to travel to London for tonight’s launch event at Thomson Reuters in London’s Canary Wharf.

The trio said: “We felt that lots of young people find creative writing difficult and give up when they get stuck. With the help of our IT and English teachers, we came up with the idea for The Story Wall.

“The Apps for Good course gave us wonderful insight into the correct way to plan, structure and create effective apps ready to take to market.

“In terms of our future careers and lives this has been a unique opportunity. To win the award was the icing on the cake.”

Cockburn School IT teacher Lee Hargreaves, said: “The Apps for Good course has encouraged our students to explore technology as a tool for improving and benefiting society as a whole, which has been an incredibly rewarding project for them to be involved in. The course enables us to bring a creative learning programme to our school that unlocks the confidence and talents of our students.”

Debbie Forster of Apps for Good, said: “The course teaches coding and the fundamentals of the digital world.”
