Mine's a Pint of Science! Leeds pubs stage talks by university experts

A series of talks are taking place in the city at the end of this month covering subjects such as the birth of the solar system and the Earth’s magnetic field.

But rather than happening in dusty lecture halls or hushed seminar rooms, they will be held in three city centre PUBS as part of an international festival called Pint of Science.

It has been running in cities around the world since 2013 but has been brought to Leeds for the first time this year by a University of Leeds team led by Dr James Bailey.

He said: “Pint of Science is a fantastic opportunity for people to directly interact with scientists and learn about the world leading research undertaken within our city.

“This is the first time that Leeds will be taking part in this festival and we’re excited about the great programme of events that we’ll be sharing with people.”

The festival runs from May 23 to 25 and will have three local venues – the Midnight Bell, O’Neill’s and Mr Foleys.

Alongside a main talk, each evening will include science-related activities such as experiments, quizzes and puzzles.

People got an early taste of what will be on offer during the festival at a preview event held at the Midnight Bell.

Pint of Science co-founder Dr Praveen Paul said: “We want to give people the opportunity to learn about the latest scientific developments directly from the scientists themselves – and then feel free to question them.

“The rapid growth of Pint of Science from a grassroots effort to a global movement has shown that we may have been underestimating both scientists and the public, and that there is a greater need for more events like these.”
