Matron jailed for food crimes

A Leeds matron is behind bars today after a shocking crime.

But luckily for Jayne Upperton, her incarceration is all for charity.

The nurse was imprisoned in Leeds Town Hall’s Victorian cells today as part of St Gemma’s Hospice’s annual Jail and Bail fundraising event.

Jayne, a matron at the Moortown hospice, was nominated to be jailed by colleagues for the offence of eating smelly packed lunches.

The medic favours smoked fish and gherkins in her lunchbox. She was ‘arrested’ by volunteer officers from West Yorkshire Police and sent for a mock trial, with her punishment being to raise £500 in donations to secure her release from the cells.

“It’s a real fun event with a bit of difference. I’m hoping we’ll raise lots of money for our patient care, and of course, that the kind people of Leeds will give me my freedom back and donate to my bail money so that I can get back to my important job!” she said.

Seven other convicts from businesses Red’s True Barbecue, Aql, Covance, Visit Leeds, British Gas and Carillion have also been sent down.

The event usually raises around £10,000 towards patient care.
