Parkin stood outside his neighbour's house and began shouting and swearing.

He said: "Don't mess with me. I'm going to stab you."

Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said Parkin then tried to kick the front door down.

He went back to his own home then returned with the knife.

Mr Ahmed said the neighbour opened the door and there was a face-to-face confrontation between the two men.

Officers attended the scene and arrested Parkin after being told he had been armed with a knife.

Parkin was interviewed and initially claimed not to have been carrying a weapon.

He said witnesses may have been mistaken as he had been holding a beer can.

The 51-year-old said he could not remember much about the incident as he had been drinking.

Parkin said he could recall confronting his neighbour over music being played loudly.

He pleaded guilty to possession of a blade in public.

Richard Reed, mitigating, said Parkin accepted he needed to control his drinking.

He said: "He returned home having been out with his sister and music was being played very loudly.

"He accepts that that was no excuse for his subsequent behaviour."

Parkin was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.
