The man, believed to be in his twenties, suffered serious injuries when the cart and a small Ford panel van collided at around 7.45pm on Thursday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people, including a man and three children also on the cart, were taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

The man and two boys remain in hospital but the third boy was discharged after being treated for a knee injury.

The van driver, a 45-year-old man from Leeds, suffered minor injuries.

He was arrested in connection with the collision and remains in police custody.

Both vehicles were travelling along the northbound carriageway of the A63 Great North Road, near South Milford Lodge.

The road was closed while investigators examined the scene and was reopened at around 1.30am on Friday.
