Police were called to Kings Road by the ambulance service at around 2pm yesterday.
A police cordon was set up across Kings Road and also Royal Park Road while detectives combed the area.
There had been initial reports that firearms were involved but these were quashed.
Local resident Pauline Milner, aged 55, said: “It is tragic and there is usually a story.
“There will be two sides. I hope whoever it is recovers and whoever did it gets the help they need.”
