A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at a block of flats in West Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to the two-storey building in Highfield Road, Hemsworth, shortly before 11.50pm on Friday.

One woman had jumped from a first floor window before the arrival of firefighters and needed treatment for a spinal injury.

Five more people were rescued by fire crews with the help of a ladder, with two being given treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation.

A further 10 people were able to safely get themselves out of the building.

Police said the 32-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident remained in custody on Saturday.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to ring Wakefield CID via West Yorkshire Police’s 101 phone number.
