Making time to be together

Mum, writer, and videographer, 34-year-old Nik Farah, lives on the border of Wakefield with her husband Adam and their daughter Imogen, aged four. The family is excitedly preparing for a holiday to the south of France next month, where Imogen is delighted at the prospect of being able to go swimming every single day.

What’s the weirdest thing your child has done to your house? I usually know Imogen’s up to something mischievious when she goes very quiet. Recently I went upstairs to find she’d ‘teepeed’ all of the bedrooms with toilet paper!

What’s your favourite family day out? We love being outdoors together, and though we have some great farms and attractions near us, some of our best family times have been visting local country parks with a frisbee, or a picnic, and making daisy chains, or practicing cartwheels.

What family task takes you the longest? The supermarket shop is never a short job. Imogen likes to put everything into the trolley herself, and insists she lead the way, even though she doesn’t know which aisles we need to go down. It usually ends with one of us running around distracting her, while the other dashes around throwing items in the trolley.

What hobbies/pastimes do you enjoy as a family and separately? Adam and I do a martial arts class together one evening a week; a great chance to get our blood pumping, as well as allowing us a regular slot of time together where we’re not ‘mummy and daddy.’ Imogen loves her weekly swimming and gymnastics classes.

What’s the best thing about weekends and why? With two working parents, and a little one in school five days a week, the best thing about weekends is time together. We make a point of putting work aside and planning adventures for the three of us to go on together - even if it’s just an afternoon of baking, or a bike ride.

What’s your child’s favourite meal? Mummy’s homemade spaghetti bolognese, or ‘Daddy McDonalds’ (homemade low fat burgers and Actifry chips).

Proudest achievements? We’re a snap happy family and love capturing every precious moment of Imogen’s childhood. Some of my favourite memories are her grin when she won her school’s Easter Egg painting competition in April, being dressed as a monkey in her first dance school performance, and when she ‘graduated’ from nursery last month in a mini cap and gown. Amazing times.
