M621 in Leeds to have speed limit reduced and lanes narrowed

The project – which began in November – has seen drainage work carried out between junctions 7 and 3 on the M621, and a steel safety barrier installed at the side of the motorway.

The next stage will be to install a concrete barrier in the central reservation area and carry out further work to prevent flooding.

From Monday (Feb 19) drivers will see narrow lanes installed and for the safety of drivers and the workforce the speed limit will be reduced from 50mph to 30mph in the anticlockwise direction (junction 43 to Leeds City Centre).

And from Monday, February 26 the same restrictions will be in place in the clockwise direction - Leeds city centre to the M1 junction 43.

Highways England Project Manager Esref Ulas said: “We recognise that this is a very busy route and that is why we are carrying out these vital safety improvements.

“We would like to thank drivers in advance for their patience with our scheme so far and encourage them to allow extra time for their journeys – particularly at rush hour.”

The M621 will remain closed overnight in either direction between junctions 1 and 7. Signed diversions will be in place.

When major events are planned in Leeds City Centre – such as football matches – the road closure times will be changed to minimise any delays.

The scheme is due to be completed in May 2018.
