Long-awaited new Leeds medical centre to open

Alwoodley Medical Centre, on Saxon Mount, off King Lane, will open its doors on March 29 in a brand new building.

Two GP practices, Nursery Lane and Moorcroft, are to be merged at the centre though Adel surgery will remain open for patients in that area.

Discussions had been underway for years about creating the new medical centre in an area where residents were having to travel to get see a family doctor.

The new building, close to the entrance to the Moor Allerton District Centre, has been constructed on the site of a disused bus turnaround.

It will boast facilities including 16 consulting rooms and parking for 70 cars, as well as housing more doctors and nurses and offering more specialist services for patients.

Registered patients will be able to see the doctor of their choice and the facility will have the capacity to expand its services and extend its opening hours.

New patients are also welcome.

Plans for the new centre had been discussed for years but were delayed by NHS reforms about who was to sign off on the project.

The Yorkshire Evening Post previously reported that the Leeds Local Medical Committee, which represents GPs, was “deeply concerned” when NHS Leeds disappeared and NHS England took over its work.

Eventually the final green light was given for the project and work started on the site in early 2015.

At the time, local councillors welcomed the news, saying that the centre would provide residents in the surrounding community with the much improved GP services that they deserved.
