A team of litter pickers in canoes cleared 30 bags full of rubbish from the River Aire in just two hours on Saturday.

Volunteers from Leeds and White Rose Canoe Club and community group H2010 joined Bamm Nuttall Ltd, Leeds City Council, Groundwork and the Canal & River Trust to tidy up the river and nearby areas.

The event was part of the River Stewardship pilot, which Groundwork Leeds has been commissioned to run by Aire Action Leeds.

John Cummins of Groundwork said: “It was a fantastic day and everybody had such a great time. We hope to repeat the event and get more people involved.”
