LGI and St James's to star in new ITV hospital documentary presented by Davina McCall

The A&E departments at Leeds' busiest hospitals will feature in a new documentary celebrating the work of the NHS.

TV presenter Davina McCall will be embedded in the emergency units at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's Hospital as part of ITV's A&E Live.

The behind-the-scenes show will be broadcast to mark the NHS's 70th anniversary.

Paramedics and 999 call handlers will also be filmed at work as well as the doctors and nurses who treat patients in the trauma centres.

Leeds was chosen because it is considered the birthplace of emergency medicine thanks to a medic at LGI called Maurice Ellis, who set up the Casualty Surgeons Association in 1967. He was the world's first A&E consultant.

In a television first, there will be unprecedented footage of some of the 210,000 people who pass through the city's A&E departments every year being treated.

Leeds is also home to a Major Trauma Centre and a children's emergency department.

“We are delighted to be opening our doors to ITV for this exciting new show and we’re looking forward to welcoming Davina McCall to our wonderful city.

“Just over 50 years ago, an LGI doctor called Maurice Ellis became the country’s first A&E consultant - some say the first in the world - making it the perfect place to celebrate the achievements of our emergency services and the NHS in its 70th year.

“A&E Live will be an opportunity for the public to go behind the scenes at these busy emergency departments and discover how our fantastic doctors, nurses, clinical workers, and support teams come together to help people in their time of greatest need.”
