Leeds University student on the roll for film making award

Rebecca Daniel, 21, has been nominated for a prize at the Royal Television Society’s (RTS) Student Television Awards.

The student, who lives in Meanwood, is due to travel to London to see her short animation film ‘Fridge Wars’ presented alongside other films made by students across the country. Her film will be in the ‘Undergraduate Open’ category.

She said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised.

“I am excited to go down to London for the event, as people from the film industry will be there.”

Rebecca’s film was inspired by objects that were on her kitchen fridge at home. She decided to try out her idea using an editing software.

She added: “I had never used an animation software before, so I just wanted to experiment with it.

“I came up with the title ‘Fridge Wars’ because the film is about two drawings on a fridge who end up fighting and throwing magnets and things at each other.

“I wanted to think outside the box, because a lot of other ideas I had thought of had already been done.”

Rebecca’s inspiration for making and producing films came from a young age. She decided to follow a career in the subject after taking part in a project run by Yorkshire-based film training company, Beta Filmworks.

After completing her Cinema and Photography degree at Leeds University, Rebecca hopes to take on a production or production assistant role.

The RTS Student Television Awards will take place on June 3 and the winning film will be shown on Sky Arts’ on demand service.

She said: “To be nominated is brilliant, as I never thought I’d get this opportunity, and it will be one of my biggest achievements. But to win would be the cherry on the top.”
