Leeds United v Wigan: Playing away from home suits us fine, says Wigan boss Caldwell

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Leeds United, Caldwell claimed the onus to “force the game” at Elland Road would be on Garry Monk’s side, regardless of Wigan’s poor away record. The club have taken a single point for six games, a record which leaves Caldwell’s team trapped them inside the Championship’s relegation places.

Their first away point came during a goalless draw at Brentford before the international break, part of a run of three matches without defeat, and Wigan face a Leeds side who are bidding to record a fifth straight home victory.

Caldwell, however, said: “I think away from home suits us a little bit more because we have such a threat on the counter-attack. We don’t need to force the game as much as we do at home.

“The run of games now is three unbeaten with two clean sheets, which was something we worked very hard on and knew we had to put right.

“We have to build on that, add a little bit more in terms of the forward play, finish teams off and be more ruthless in an attacking sense.”

Caldwell paid tribute to Monk for “steadying the ship” at Elland Road since his appointment as Leeds head coach in July.

“They’ve picked up a lot of good results of late,” Caldwell said. “He gets his teams playing the right way.

“They try and play out, they play through lines and cause you a lot of problems so I’m sure it’ll be a very good game. No two games are alike and you have to prepare for each game on its own merits. We’ve looked in great depth at Leeds.”
