As previously reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Edna Newton died last month aged 94 after more than 60 unbroken years as a season ticket holder at Elland Road. Edna’s relatives have now confirmed that her funeral will take place at 3pm next Friday, November 23, at Cottingley Crematorium in Leeds.

And, following the announcement of the funeral details, a call has gone out on social media for fans to attend and give her the send-off she deserves.

Supporters are being asked to gather at the Drysalters pub near Elland Road at 2.30pm before making the short walk together to the crematorium.

It is hoped many will turn out in old-style Leeds scarves as a nod to Edna’s long years of support for the Whites.

Edna’s nephew, Colin Newton, told the YEP: “The response we have had since we lost my aunt has been incredible and very touching. She would be amazed and proud to see what people have been saying about her.”

Edna, also a much-loved sister and great-aunt, attended her first game at Elland Road in the late 1930s.

The Beeston resident’s death was marked with a minute’s applause at United’s home match against Nottingham Forest on October 27.

Although all fans are welcome to attend her funeral, the wake afterwards will be for family and friends only.
