TWO people were injured when their cars collided head-on on the A65 between Burley-in-Wharfedale and Ilkley.

One driver had to be freed from her vehicle by firefighters.

The crash happened at 9.30 on Thursday night on Coutances Way, the riverside road named after Ilkley’s twin town in France.

A Vauxhall Astra and a Vauxhall Corsa collided outside Saxton Lodge, a restaurant on the site of an old Little Chef diner.

Firefighters from Ilkley, Otley and Rawdon attended.

One fire crew member said the male driver of the Vauxhall Astra was out of his vehicle and lying in the roadside when crews arrived.

“A passer-by may have helped him get out,” he said.

The young woman driver of the Corsa was trapped in her vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters.

She was suffering chest and leg injuries.

Both were taken to hospital.
