Leeds turning up the heat for return of Yorkshire Food and Drink Festival

Things are hotting up in Millennium Square this summer.

Leeds is set to have its first chilli eating competition as foodie fans are in for a treat with the return of the Yorkshire Food and Drink Festival.

Food lovers from across the county are set to descend on Millennium Square for the free three day festival on June 3, 4 and 5.

Last year a record-breaking 60,000 people flocked to the annual event which celebrates all the best Yorkshire has to offer by way of food and drink.

This year, which sees the show return for its sixth year, is set to be even bigger and better.

Organisers have added a second demonstration stage to the culinary celebration hosted by three of the county’s top cookery schools.

Budding Masterchef’s will get the chance to try their hand at some culinary delights thanks to Jamie’s Ministry of Food, Malton Cookery School and Cooks The Carlton School of Food.

On the main demonstration stage, compared by Great British Menu star Stephanie Moon, chefs from across Yorkshire will cook some of their favourite mouthwatering dishes.

Among those taking part will be Afsaneh Kavini, expert in Persian cuisine who has a pop up in Leeds as well as Gyp and Salvo Dammone from Salvos who will show food fans how to cook delicious meals for less.

On the final day Simon Chappela head tutor of Jamie’s Ministry of Food Leeds will conjure up three dishes.

Leeds restaurant stalwart George Psarias director of Greek restaurant the Olive Tree, will also take to the stage on the final day.

And to bring this year’s festival to a close Frank Jay, director of the Chilli Shop will hold the Leed’s first chilli eating competition.

“What makes Yorkshire special is the fact we have such a wide range of produce,” says Steph Moon.

She added: “It will be a fantastic weekend celebrating some of the best food and drink on offer.”

As well as demonstrations there will be all manner of food and drink stalls for people to try a wide range of produce from God’s Own County and beyond.

More than 100 exhibitors are set to take to Millennium Square for the culinary celebration.
