Great George Street, behind Leeds Town Hall, is set to be closed to traffic until Saturday as contractors working for Yorkshire Water carry out repairs to a large crack in the road caused by the leak

The burst, which happened at around 5am today, led to Great George Street being closed to traffic.

A traffic diversion is in place via the Headrow and Calverley Street.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said, “Our technicians and a repair team from our contractors, Morrison Utility Services, are currently dealing with a burst water main in Great George Street in the centre of Leeds.

“Great George Street has been closed to vehicles and we apologise to motorists who are being affected by the closure.

“We anticipate that the water main will be repaired today but the burst had caused significant damage.

“It’s likely that Great George Street will remain closed to traffic until Saturday so the repairs to the road surface, footpaths and a nearby car park can be made safely.

“We are sorry for any traffic delays and would advise motorists to avoid the area if at all possible.”
