Andrea Jenkyns says more than 130 complaints have been made to her office about the issue.

Residents said the reliability and affordability of getting an adequate signal is causing frustration, and more needs to be done to improve the situation.

Following complaints, Ms Jenkyns has brought the matter up with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport through written questions addressed to minister Matt Hancock.

Ms Jenkyns said: “Too many people in Morley and Outwood are plagued by poor phone coverage.

“Improving it is essential for them to be able to work and connect with their family and friends.

“I will keep working to make sure the right steps are being taken regarding both mobile phone coverage and broadband connectivity in the local area, so that everyone is able to benefit from new and improved technology.”

Ms Jenkyns is hopeful greater coverage is in the pipeline after speaking with Mr
Hancock.

He said: “Improving mobile connectivity across the UK is a priority.

“The legally-binding licence obligations arising from the December 2014 agreement require each mobile network operator to provide voice/SMS text coverage to at least 90 per cent of the UK’s landmass by end-2017.

“Ofcom’s 2016 Connected Nations Report shows that 99 per cent of UK premises now have indoor voice coverage and 96 per cent have indoor 4G data coverage. Reforms to mobile planning laws and proposed reforms of the Electronic Communications Code will support further investment and improvements.”
