Leeds tannery to become 228 apartments

Plans to convert a former tannery into over 200 apartments have been approved by council planners.

Permission has been granted to transform the Hill Top Works site off Buslingthorpe Lane in Sheepscar, close to Scott Hall Road, for residential use.

Stage One Development will turn the former mill building and leather works, which have been empty for more than 20 years, into 228 flats with good access to the city centre.

Brewster Bye Architects have designed the development, which is located on a 1.25-hectare brownfield site. The plans respect Hill Top’s heritage, with the 115ft mill chimney and distinctive boundary wall remaining as focal points for residents.

Leeds City Council approved the proposal for five new buildings, a 143-space underground car park and extensive landscaping. The apartments will be a mix of two- and three-bedroom properties.

Brewster Bye managing director Chris Austin said:

“Securing planning for this development will breathe new life into a redundant site as well as providing a superb range of much needed new homes which will be targeted at first-time buyers.

“The site occupies an elevated position and many of the homes will enjoy far-reaching views across Leeds. The development will also boast plenty of high quality amenity space that will benefit from lots of natural light through the five buildings being stepped in height, along the natural contours of the site.

“It’s also great that the site’s historic boundary wall, landmark chimney and original cottages can be incorporated into the development. These will continue to point towards the site’s industrial heritage and act as a reminder that the Sheepscar area was once home to such a thriving leather industry.”
