Leeds suburb becomes interactive gallery during Walk of Art 2016

Artists, businesses and residents joined forces to create more than 100 creative walking tour stops to temporarily turn Horsforth into an interactive gallery over the weekend.

Everything from scarecrow trails, lace making workshops and a ‘travelling gig’ featuring 21 live acts to a creative children’s drive through cinema and hide-and-seek hedgehog trail have brought the area to life.

The event comprised of four walking routes through Horsforth as well as dozens of connected displays and activities.

As part of the Walk of Art shops along Town Street exhibited work from local schools, which have been working with more than 25 artists.

Lara Rule, a Walk of Art organiser, said: “You never know what is going to stick with the children and how it will inspire them in the future.

“These mediums actively create flexible, problem solving free-thinkers and those are three traits that our kids need to become creative, adaptable and confident adults.”

Youngsters enjoyed workshops varying from glass design with Twice Fired and the Rebel Glass Company to jewellery design with Martha Dalton and perfume portraiture with fine arts perfumer Michael Borkowsky.

The event, which hosted its main events today and yesterday, was kickstarted by a lights display on St Margaret’s Church set to classical music before a family friendly disco and live music on Friday.

The free-to-attend event receives no outside funding and no artists involved are paid for their time.
