Leeds road closures for £1.6m pipe work

Work is to start on the Wigton Lane project in mid July, with a traffic light system to be set up as engineers replace the sewer.

Yorkshire Water said it had written to around 600 residents to explore options for the work, with the majority opting for the partial closure.

“We appreciate the work will have a big impact and that’s why we consulted with the community,” said Andrew McKinley, project manager.

“We have listened to the views of local residents and will use traffic lights when we replace the new sewer.”

Detailed plans were revealed at a drop-in session on Tuesday, with around 25 residents attending to see how the work will affect them.

The existing cast-iron sewer is prone to bursting and leaks, said Yorkshire Water, and is to be replaced with a more robust, plastic pipe.

“The project will take us about six months to complete but this very much depends on the ground and weather conditions we encounter,” added Mr McKinley. “The new sewer will reduce the risk of sewer flooding and the traffic disruption that happens as a result of this main bursting.”

Work is to start the Manor House Lane end of Wigton Road, and work in approximately 100m sections at a time.
