Leeds residents invited to pay their respects to fallen forces personnel

Services will be held on Victoria Gardens this week at the war memorial to mark Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Coun Gerry Harper will join residents and other dignitaries at the war memorial on Victoria Gardens to lay wreaths.

At 10.50am, a procession will leave Leeds Civic Hall and finish at Victoria Gardens. Amongst those joining the Lord Mayor in the parade will be the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Mr Chris Brown, and the leader of Leeds City Council, Coun Judith Blake.

Led by the Right Reverend Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, the service at Victoria Gardens will also be broadcast on two big screens around the war memorial to give everybody a view of the proceedings.

The public are also welcome to attend a separate Armistice Day service on Friday, organised by the Royal British Legion, at the same war memorial at 11am. Coun Harper said: “The service is always extremely emotional. I look forward to welcoming the public on the day as we remember and pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives while serving in our armed forces.”
