Health care inspectors have branded a Leeds nursing home '˜inadequate' after reporting a catalogue of failings.

The Gable Nursing Home, in Pudsey, was found to be putting people “at risk of harm” through a lack of safety checks, staff training and behaviour care plans, while competence checks were not up to date and safe recruitment procedures were not being followed.

An unannounced Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection of the home in late January also found that personal evacuation plans were not in place and that 17 workers’ basic life support training was “out of date”.

The CQC rated its effectiveness and safety as ‘inadequate’, its leadership and responsiveness as ‘requires improvement’ and its care as ‘good’. It was rated inadequate overall.

Meanwhile the manager of The Gable, which caters to up to 23 vulnerable older people, has dubbed the report a “travesty” and claims to be considering legal action against the regulator.

The report stated the facility was in breach of Health and Social Care Act and Care Quality Commission regulations.

Nevertheless The Gable was praised for having “very caring and friendly staff”, while some service users described it as a “nice place to be” where they were “very happy with the care”.

Fowad Minhas, manager at The Gables, said CQC came “at the worst possible time in our recent history” shortly after an unplanned loss of several staff. He said next of kin are happy, while residents are stimulated and are treated with respect.

After CQC put the home into special measures, temporarily suspending new admissions, Mr Minhas said: “I think the CQC report is a travesty that will have a negative impact on a number of people in the local area.”

He added: “We are being punished for providing good quality care.”
