Leeds nostalgia: Same old warm welcome at Leeds pub

It is also the oldest pub in the village, dating back over 200 years and overlooking the local cricket ground. This week’s Now and Then compares pictures of the pub, on Bradford Road between Guiseley and Ilkley, taken more than 100 years apart.

The most recent picture (below) was taken in 2009, while the black and white image was taken around 110 years ago, when the pub was called Fox & Hounds. It appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post on November 11, 1985, inside a special edition entitled ‘Old Leeds’.

It was known as ‘The Fox’ in 1985 and was described then as ‘smart and trendy’, although today one might say it was ‘rustic and idyllic’, sporting farmhouse furniture & fireplaces in a very country-style environment.

One thing the pub has always been renowned for, however, is its warm welcome.

As can be seen in the black and white picture, a legend on one of the walls reads ‘Headquarters of Everybody’. And judging by the number of coaches parked outside the building, it looks as though it has always been popular with the locals.

These days it’s a gastro-pub which prides itself on unpretentious, good, honest food and drink.

Certainly it’s gained plaudits from our restaurant reviewers in the past, both in 2009 and again in 2014. We praised the pub for its warm welcome, sumptuous food and great value for money.

The pub is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 11pm, Sunday 11am to 10.30pm.
