He died in September 1988 aged just 54 after falling from a horse while filming The Return of the Musketeers. He suffered internal bleeding and hip injuries but despite being taken to a hospital in Madrid, he died shortly afterwards of a heart attack.

Kinnear gained national recognition after appearing in comedy series That Was The Week That Was.
