Leeds nostalgia: Primrose Hill High School closure plan in 1987

Plans to close a top performing Leeds high school were met with anger by pupils, teachers and councillors in Leeds.

Primrose Hill High, which opened in 1965, had more than 600 pupils and was hailed as an example of multi-cultural education at the time. It’s gymnastics squad had even appeared on TV and its pupils were praised for their good behaviour.

Teacher/governor Gerald Harrison said: “I was horrified to hear of the closure proposal. From a moral, educational, community and every other standpoint, it is absolutely ridiculous to suggest closing it.” Leeds City Council was considering the closure plan as part of new ‘tertiary education’ provisions within the area.
