Leeds nostalgia: November 1993: TV vet given '˜freedom of the city'

Actor Christopher Timothy, star of TV vet drama All Creatures Great and Small, became an honorary Yorkshireman. The Sussex-born actor was presented with a giant Yorkshire passport by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Keith Loudon at Leeds Civic Hall.

He said: “I am tremendously honoured. I don’t like black pudding, I don’t drink bitter and I’m not a cricket fan, so I don’t know what I have done to deserve it. But if I have done something for Yorkshire, I am delighted because it’s done a great deal for me.”

The honour was, of course, in recognition of the huge success of the TV series about Thirk vet James Herriot and the benefits it brought to Yorkshire as a county.

The life of the legendary vet is commemorated today at The World of James Herriot museum, Thirsk.

Christopher Timothy went on to appear in BBC daytime drama, Doctors. He returned to theatre in March 2013 in The Living Room. In 2014 he played Inspector Hubbard in the UK tour of the stage thriller Dial M for Murder. As of this year, he is appearing in Eastenders.
