The film was savaged by MPs, who said that since his retirement from politics, Mr Profumo had dedicated himself to charity work, earning an MBE for his troubles in 1975.

They argued the film would only heap disomfort upon both him and his wife by dragging the incident up again.

Roy Hattersly blasted: “I think that to resuscitate all this to make a profit is a scandal in itself. To rake it up after 27 years... seems to be disgrace to our society.”

Mr Profumo had an affair with Christine Keeler, pictured (right), whom it was claimed was also seeing a Russian spy.
