Leeds nostalgia: Clue in hunt for Leeds Mullineux family

An appeal which ran in Times Past in August last year has borne fruit.

Leeds father Mohammed Ilyas was renovating his loft last year when he chanced upon a box hidden beneath the floorboards and in it was a cache of family pictures dating from the 1970s to the 1920s.

He was loathe to throw the pictures away and contacted Times Past in a bid to find the owners. Now, after almost a year, a relative of one of the people in the pictures has come forward.

The pictures were found in his loft at Harehills Place and were of the Mullineux family, Herbert Stanley Mullineux and Gladys Grundy among those named.

Helen Mullineux from Hertfordshire, chanced upon our online version of the article and recognised one of the children in the pictures.

She said: “She had the same name as me, I was at school with her, she was my third cousin, although we were not that close and I do not know what happened to her after we left. We attended Worsley Wardley Grammar School, Lancashire. She was a couple of weeks older than I was, which led to some confusion in the school. They used to say she was the Helen With Curly Hair. Her mother was a Grundy.”

The school became a comprehensive but was later demolished. Our original article can be found online by typing “Ilyas pictures yorkshire evening post” and clicking on the top link.”

Another reader, Michael Hogg, did his own research and said: “Herbert Stanley Mullineux was born in Barton Upon Irwell in Lancashire on 26 August 1914. He died in High Peak, Derbyshire in 1981. He married Gladys Grundy in Barton, Lancashire in 1945. Gladys was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1915 and died in High Peak, Derbyshire in 1989.

“There were two children. They were Judith, born June 9, 1949 in Bolton, Lancashire and Helen, born February 9, 1953, also in Bolton, Lancashire.”
