Plans to chop down 47 trees on Lidgett Park Road in Roundhay led to the intervention of a government minister.

Environment Secretary Anthony Crosland waded into the row, which saw 60 residents battling against the county council, which said the trees were dangerous and needed to come out.

The story ran in the YEP in February 1976.

Speaking at a public meeting held at St Edmund’s Church Hall on February 3, Michael Whitaker, a leading member of the Roundhay Conservation Society, said local MP Keith Joseph had written to Mr Crosland.

He added: “As a result, the minister has called for a report from the local office of the Department of the Environment in Leeds.”
