Plans to create a village with 874 homes, a care home and new local centre north east of Leeds have been submitted to the city council.

An application to develop the former Royal Ordnance Factory site at Thorp Arch has been brought forward by St Congar Land, on behalf of Rockspring Hanover Property Unit Trust. Officials behind the Rudgate Village plans say they will “also deliver a new country park, retain calcareous grasslands, a wildlife corridor and improvements to the Sustrans cycle route 665, helping to improve links to the wider area”.

The plans have been scaled down in recent months, but critics say the brownfield site is not suitable for housing.
