The Merrion Centre will start its biggest Christmas countdown to date as TV and sport stars join the lights switch on celebrations.

Leeds Rhino’s Rob Burrow, Stevie Ward, Jamie Jones Buchanan and Cameron Smith as well as a number of first team players from Leeds United’s squad are due to make an appearance in helping to get the party started.

There will be a performance by Britain’s Got Talent dance troupe Scandalous Productions and up and coming singer Thomas Teago.

Meanwhile, for younger festive fans, TV favourites Ben and Holly will be on hand to meet with children and pose for pictures.

Friday’s (Nov 10) events starts at 3.30pm and the switch on is at 5.45pm.

There will be free samples from some of the centre’s food, drink and leisure brands and competitions.

To ward off the winter chill a mulled wine and waffle stand is also being added to the main shopping mall on the day.

Throughout the lead up to Christmas, youngsters can enjoy an LED lit giant festive bauble and a free Santa’s grotto from November 18.

This year the shopping centre has added a festive, winter garden with a post box for those letters to Santa.

James Broughton, from Town Centre Securities, the owner of the Merrion Centre, said: “Last year was a fantastic year for us, our most successful Christmas ever and with so many new additions to the mix of retail and leisure outlets we’re confident this year it’ll be even bigger.

“We know what a busy time of year it will be for parents, so we’ve made sure there will be plenty for little ones to enjoy, but we’re ensuring parents can have fun and join in the celebrations as well. We hope lots of people will come down and help start the countdown to the best time of the year.”
